How a Chiropractor’s Education and Training Contributes to the Safety of Chiropractic Care

Safety of Chiropractic Care

If you have never visited a chiropractor before, you might be doing a lot of research before your first visit. Learning about how chiropractors are trained and educated can help you feel more confident before your appointment with our Sandy Springs chiropractor.

Chiropractic Education

Becoming a chiropractor takes approximately seven to eight years of college, including four years of undergraduate study, and then three to five years at a chiropractic college. While at a chiropractic college, students complete courses in anatomy, histology, chiropractic principles and procedures, physiology, embryology, biochemistry, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, radiographic anatomy, nutrition, and much more.

Hands-On Learning and Training

During their fourth year of Chiropractic College, students gain hands-on learning and extensive training through a clinical internship at a chiropractor's office. In addition to treating patients with the supervision of a licensed, experienced chiropractor,  students will see patients in a clinic setting at their respective Chiropractic College/University.

Certification and Licensure

Once a chiropractor has graduated from a chiropractic college with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, they must take and pass their board exam before applying for a license to practice. Most states require passing scores on all four parts of the test administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Only after passing can a chiropractor obtain licensure from their state.

Continuing Education and Research

To maintain their licensure, chiropractors are required to earn continuing education credits each year. In addition, a chiropractor can earn a postdoctoral diplomate certification in a subspecialty like radiology, neurology, or acupuncture, through the American Chiropractic Association. They may also contribute to research in their field by participating in studies or research papers.
