Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

Written By Levinson Chiropractic & Vax-D Therapy on December 10, 2018

Spinal decompression is a safe, effective non-surgical alternative that’s shown remarkable effectiveness in treating back pain.

A survey by the American Physical Therapy Association found that while two-thirds of the people surveyed experience back pain, 37% percent declined to get help for their pain.

That may be because most people don’t realize that there is a simple, safe, and effective way to treat back pain — spinal decompression.

How Spinal Decompression Works to Halt Back Pain

Although this may be the first time you’ve heard of it, chiropractors have been providing non-surgical spinal decompression therapy for many years.

It is used not only to decrease pain, but to improve spinal function and health and help patients recover from bulging, degenerated, or herniated discs.

During spinal decompression therapy, a negative pressure is created between the discs of the spine through traction. This helps in repositioning damaged section to allow nutrients and blood to flow more freely for increased healing and decreased pain.

A Typical VAX-D Spinal Decompression Treatment

VAX-D stands for Vertebral Axial Decompression and it refers to an FDA-approved table that the patient will lie on during treatment.

Your upper body will stay on the fixed section of the table, while your lower body is fitted to a harness on the movable lower half.

The lower half of the table is gradually moved away from the upper half, using specific tension applied according to your individual needs.

A typical VAX-D session lasts around 30 minutes and the treatment, including amount of force applied, is calculated specifically for each patient’s needs.
